O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a associação entre nível de atividade física (nAF), aptidão física (ApF) e desempenho cognitivo (DC) de homens e mulheres idosos. Participaram da coleta de dados 43 homens com média de idade de 64.38 anos (DP = 3.35) e 40 mulheres com média de idade de 64.79 anos (DP = 3.22), todos moradores da cidade de Recife (PE), selecionados por conveniência. O nAF foi medido nos domínios: transporte, trabalho, atividades domésticas e lazer. Para avaliar a ApF foram testados: força muscular (membros superiores/inferiores), flexibilidade (lombar e de ombro) e resistência cardiorrespiratória. Para avaliar o DC foram testados: a memória de trabalho, episódica e semântica, atenção e função executiva/planejamento. Entre os homens, nAF no domínio do transporte associou-se com memória semântica (r = .333; p = .036); entre as mulheres, resistência cardiorrespiratória associou-se com memória episódica (r = .403; p = .007). Os resultados sugeriram que o nAF, ApF e DC de sujeitos idosos podem estar seletivamente associados.

The aim of the study was to analyze the association between physical activity level (PAL), physical fitness (PF) and cognitive performance (CP) of the elderly. Participated in data collection 43 men with a mean age of 64.38 years (SD = 3.35) and 40 women with a mean age of 64.79 years (SD = 3.22), all residents of the city of Recife (PE), which were selected by convenience. The PAL was evaluated on the transport, work, household activities and leisure domains. The PF was evaluated by the upper and lower member muscle strength, flexibility (low back and shoulder) and cardiorespiratory endurance tests. The tests of episodic, work and semantic memory, attention and executive function (planning), evaluate the DC. Among men, PAL in transport domain was associated with semantic memory (r = .333; p = .036); among women cardio respiratory endurance was associated with work memory (r = .403; p = .007). The results suggested that PAL, PF and CP of the elder subjects may be selectively associated.

Fecal samples from 1755 dogs and 327 cats were examined for the presence of helminths and protozoan forms. From the total samples, 486 (27.7%) dogs and 103 (31.5%) cats presented at least one parasite. The main genus of parasite in dogs were Ancylostoma (12.7%), Giardia (8.5%), Cystoisosopora (4.4%), Toxocara (2.6%), and Cryptosporidium (2.4%). The ocurrence of Ancylostoma was associated to male dogs, older than one year, while Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cystoisospora and Toxocara were associated to dogs younger than one year (P<0.05). Among cats, the most frequent parasites were Cryptosporidium (11.3%), Giardia (8.3%), Cystoisosopora (8.3%), Toxocara (6.1%), and Ancylostoma (2.1%). Cryptosporidium and Cystoisosopora were more prevalent in cats younger than one year (P < 0.05).

Samples of 114 bovine fetuses and 10 calves, which dead in perinatal period, were examined for detection of DNA. The most common detected agent was Brucella spp. in 17 samples (13.7%) followed by Leptospira spp. in 4 cases (3.2%),bovine herpesvirus (BHV) and bovine viral diarrhea (BVDV) in 3 animals (2.4%) each, and 1 for the association of BVDV and BHV. In 77.4 % (96/124) of the samples it was not possible to detect any agent.

Amostras de 10 e 14 pulgas Ctenocephalides felis felis foram coletadas de cães nos municípios de Pedreira e Mogi das Cruzes, respectivamente, no estado de São Paulo, para pesquisa de Rickettsia spp. As pulgas foram individualmente submetidas à reação em cadeia pela polimerase, tendo como alvo os genes 17-kDa e 190-kDa (OmpA) de Rickettsia, sendo esse último específico para o GFM. Nove pulgas de Pedreira (90%) e quatro pulgas de Mogi das Cruzes (28%) foram positivas para o gene 17-kDa, e oito pulgas de Pedreira (80%) e quatro de Mogi das Cruzes (28%) foram positivas para o gene 190-kDa. As seqüências de nucleotídeos do gene 190-kDa de uma pulga de Pedreira e de uma pulga de Mogi das Cruzes foram 100% idênticas; quando comparadas com dados existentes no GenBank, foram 100% idênticas com a seqüência parcial do gene 190-kDa de Rickettsia felis. Esse foi o primeiro relato de sua ocorrência no estado de São Paulo.

Samples of 10 and 14 Ctenocephalides felis felis fleas were collected on dogs from Pedreira and Mogi das Cruzes municipalities, respectively, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, for detection of Rickettsia spp. Individual fleas were submitted to Polymerase Chain Reaction targeting the 17-kDa and the 190-kDa (OmpA) genes of Rickettsiae. This later gene is specific for spotted fever group. Nine fleas from Pedreira (90%) and four fleas from Mogi das Cruzes (28%) were positive for the 17-kDa gene, and eight fleas from Pedreira (80%) and four from Mogi das Cruzes (28%) were positive for 190-kDa gene. The nucleotide sequence of the 190-kDa products of one flea from Pedreira and one flea from Mogi das Cruzes were 100% identical to each other, and when compared to the GenBank Data, they were 100% identical to the 190-kDa sequence of R. felis. This was the first report of its occurrence in the State of São Paulo.

Toxic cyanobacteria in drinking water supplies can cause serious public health problems. In the present study we analyzed the time course of changes in lung histology in young and adult male Swiss mice injected intraperitoneally (ip) with a cyanobacterial extract containing the hepatotoxic microcystins. Microcystins are cyclical heptapeptides quantified by ELISA method. Ninety mice were divided into two groups. Group C received an injection of saline (300 µl, ip) and group Ci received a sublethal dose of microcystins (48.2 µg/kg, ip). Mice of the Ci group were further divided into young (4 weeks old) and adult (12 weeks old) animals. At 2 and 8 h and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 days after the injection of the toxic cyanobacterial extract, the mice were anesthetized and the trachea was occluded at end-expiration. The lungs were removed en bloc, fixed, sectioned, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The percentage of the area of alveolar collapse and the number of polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear cell infiltrations were determined by point counting. Alveolar collapse increased from C to all Ci groups (123 to 262%) independently of time, reaching a maximum value earlier in young than in adult animals. The amount of PMN cells increased with time of the lesion (52 to 161%). The inflammatory response also reached the highest level earlier in young than in adult mice. After 2 days, PMN levels remained unchanged in adult mice, while in young mice the maximum number was observed at day 1 and was similar at days 2, 3, and 4. We conclude that the toxins and/or other cyanobacterial compounds probably exert these effects by reaching the lung through the blood stream after ip injection.
